Dieffenbachia, a plant that from the name may seem unknown but which is instead often found without our knowledge inside our homes. IS' originally from Central and South America, belongs to the Araceae family, there are many varieties and only some are present in Italy due to the size and ability to adapt to the climate we have in our country.
Dieffenbachia amoena
There Dieffenbachia amoena, most likely derived from D. picta, it comes to us from Columbia and Costa Rica. It is distinguished from other varieties by its very imposing appearance which transmits strength and solidity. It's surely among the types of Dieffenbachia if not the most widespread, although not always easy to host in an apartment because it can reach considerable heights. His stem is robust and green, the leaves are large and with a long petiole, even 60 cm long and green, with yellow and cream streaks.
Dieffenbachia, indoor plant
It is an indoor plant, due to its ability to adapt to climatic conditions that we have in our homes, the problem may arise due to the size. Appreciated for its beauty and elegance, and also because it is very simple to grow, the dieffenbachia must be arranged so that it is not an obstacle in the rooms.
It is a plant evergreen with fleshy and erect stem, very large, oval and green leaves very often streaked with yellow or cream depending on the variety.
Dieffenbachia: cultivation
When growing dieffenbachia, it is good to be aware that it is one poisonous plant in all its parts because it contains very long and pointed calcium oxalate crystal cells, dispersed in a mucilaginous substance. So here is what is essential wear gloves when working on this plant.
To position it in the best way, it must be taken into account that loves the heat and fears the cold and drafts, prefers conditions of high relative humidity (80-90%) and if we do not live in humid areas it is good regularly nebulize its leaves.

Bausei, variety deriving from D. maculata and Weirii and showing leaves with some kind of yellow splashes that have a very decorative effect.
Similarly it happens for the D. Picta Exotica, widespread in our homes, recognizable because it has no stem and leaves irregularly variegated with white and yellow. From Costa Rica comes the D. Oerstedii with much larger leaves and green, but not yellow, but with white veins along the rib.
Dieffenbachia: pruning
As already mentioned the Dieffenbachia it must not be pruned except in particular cases in which it is necessary to remove branches or eliminate dry ones. Generally enough free the plant from dry leaves to make room for new ones.
During autumn and winter we can also suspend fertilization and do not overdo it to water the plant to avoid stagnation. A warning not to "scare us" if we ever have to prune it Dieffenbachia: a poisonous latex will come out, irritating to the skin.
