Plastic in the sea, increasingly present and increasingly thrown by us, individual citizens, and also by companies. The numbers scare but they do not decrease, diving into our seas as well as into the oceans is like throwing yourself into a mound of wet plastic or almost. It is good to take the problem seriously and see how our daily habits can affect the presence of plastic in the sea. Whoever pours out an "industrial" quantity risks committing aenvironmental crime. The dangerousness of waste in the sea also has to do with the surface tension of the water, do you know what it is?
Plastic in the sea: pollution
Plastic in the sea, but not only, also on the beaches and along the coasts, is an indication of a high rate of pollution, this time much more visible than PM10 which may be less obvious, even if in the long run tremendously harmful.
Legambiente's 2017 Beach Litter survey highlights the problem and gives it dimensions. By monitoring the situation in 62 points of the coast, it emerged that there are on average 670 waste for every 100 linear meters of coastline and in the first place we find plastic, as a presence, followed by glass and ceramic, metal, paper and cardboard.
In the sea there are plastic bags, shoppers and bags, but also plastic in other forms and there is no need to blame the large multinationals by washing their hands because apparently 54% of the waste is of domestic origin. This means that we have a great responsibility, but also the possibility of having a small impact on the problem. We try to reuse plastic bags or, better still, to focus on biodegradable or fabric ones, even more resistant and often colorful and fun.
There are many innovations to know that can help us to produce less plastic, whether it then goes into the sea or into a lawn, it is always better to throw less. All thanks to research, which makes us discover new and ecological materials. To date, in fact, too many remain too much in the sea as on earth: a cardboard box disappears in a month, a roll of toilet paper in 60 days, a disposable diaper in 200 years but also for a "simple" bottle or a "trivial" shopper, it takes almost a month.
To collaborate in the liberation of the sea from plastic, they can reduce domestic consumption by committing to use the appropriate separate waste collection containers.
Plastic islands in the sea
The plastic in the sea is so present that we can speak of real plastic islands. Between Italy, Spain and France, in the Mediterranean Sea, there is a concentration of plastic that exceeds that of the so-called '"continent of garbage" present in the Atlantic Ocean, this has a really important impact on the marine environment.
Legambiente always tells us that there are 500 tons of plastic waste floating in the Mediterranean and the most densely polluted areas are that of the northern Tyrrhenian Sea and off the island of Elba, the oceans are not doing much better.
Plastic in the Adriatic Sea
The Adriatic Sea would not seem to be the most polluted, among the seas that surround our peninsula. The Tyrrhenian is the most endangered but it is difficult to make comparisons like this, when the whole Mediterranean is "chock full" of plastic.
This is of direct interest to us not only as lovers of the environment, but also as inhabitants of the Earth. We are faced with fish stuffed with microplastics, the most difficult to eliminate, even in tuna and swordfish, have been found worrying quantities of small balls of residues of tubes of cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Plastic in the traveling sea
It is inevitable that this happens and due to a turn of currents, plastic in the sea comes and goes, but always concentrating in specific areas. The fact that he travels, however, must make us understand how this is problem is to be addressed in a global way and supportive. Like air, water also has no boundaries, and it is better to join forces to try to clean up seas and oceans.
Plastic in the sea: bottles
Plastic is very present on beaches and in the sea, almost 80% and bottles thrown where they shouldn't, certainly make a strong contribution to this phenomenon. Precisely to reduce the presence of plastic bottles in the sea we can do a lot, and also local administrations and associations. Many have already moved, for example by encouraging separate waste collection through prizes and benefits, or by increasing the collection points and making it easy and smooth, so that there is no excuse for not doing it.
