Walnut husk, for the hair, very useful, even if its properties and origin are often not known. Yet they have been known for a long time, since the walnut husk in folk medicine practices was appreciated like the leaves of the plant. In China it was the basis of treatments for ailments such as asthma, constipation, low back pain and impotence.

But what what is walnut husk?

IS' the fleshy part of the fruit itself, is produced by the plant and we do not find it attached to the nuts we buy at the supermarket, so we struggle to understand immediately how it is done. Between the counters there is the seed, wrapped in the shell, but in turn the shell in nature, not in the supermarket, is protected by an inedible pulpy layer which is precisely the husk. On the outside we find a further layer, a peel called exocarp.

Already the Persians used hull-based mixes for dyeing. In their case fabrics and carpets took on color but over time we started applying this coloring method too in the food sector where it also works as a flavoring, for example in the case of nocino.

And then it was the turn of the hair: the husk gives the hair red-brown highlights. More than coloring them on his own, he gives them reflections. We cannot talk about hair dye, it would not be correct, even if when we use the walnut husk at length i hair darkens almost permanently.

Always on the hair, sometimes the dried and pulverized walnut husk is applied after being mixed with different types of henna in order to obtain more or less intense shades of red and cover white hair.

Walnut husk: oil

The oil is obtained from the husk which is always used in the aesthetic and cosmetic fields, this time as tan for the skin, as well as a reflex for the hair. It is not a real tan, the one that walnut husk oil gives to our skin, but this substance is the same used in solar products.

It has some protective and partially shielding action, but it does not perform the task of other suitable sunscreens, never to be neglected. Among the users of walnut husk oil there are numerous bodybuilders who spread it to prepare for competitions by showing how sculpted their muscles are.

Walnut husk: properties

Highlighter for the hair, tanning for the skin, the walnut husk contains several active ingredients, the main and most important for us are tannins, flavonoids and naphthoquinones such as juglone.

The juglone, perhaps less well known than the others, has allelopathic properties, it affects the growth and development of other living beings. The husk in its entirety also boasts antibacterial and astringent, vermifuge and keratinizing properties.

Black walnut husk

If the walnut is ripe, the husk is green but as the days go by it gets darker because of the tannins, until it appears dark brown.

Walnut husk: where to buy

Hull-based products are easy to find in beauty or herbalist stores but are even easier to find online. For example, you can buy it on Amazon a 100ml package of tanning oil for less than 10 euros to experience the effect on the skin.

Walnut husk: side effects

When using walnut products it is best that we look at the expiration date because they are easily available.

For some animals this substance is even toxic: dogs and horses do not they can become intoxicated so if we have one of these animals at home, it is better to keep the walnut husk carefully. Even those allergic to dried fruit can result intolerant to husk, better check before using it.
