More than a hundred toxic substances derived from medicines, pesticides, paints, cosmetics or cleaning products float and are deposited on the banks of Spanish rivers and heavy metal remains sneak into the organism of our most threatened fauna; it is garbage that is not seen.
Beyond the plastic bottles, cigarette butts, wipes and other waste that are planted in protected areas, the presence in the terrestrial environment of contaminants of chemical origin threatens rivers, streams or lagoons, affects the anthropic uses of the soil and is largely responsible for the pollution that reaches the ocean.
Freeing our spaces of garbage
In 2017, the conservation organization SEO / BirdLife and Ecoembes launched the Libera Project to raise awareness and mobilize citizens to keep natural spaces free of what was called “garbage”, through knowledge, prevention and participation.
And with this initiative Libera Ciencia was born, for “With standardized, scientific and rigorous data, quantify the impact not only of garbage, but of all those contaminants difficult to detect with the naked eye”Explains Carlos Ciudad, a technician for the conservation NGO.
With "Voices from trash”, A series of twelve reports that value the work of the different protagonists of the Libera Project, EFEverde brings the public the impact of the abandonment of waste in the natural environment, contributes to the awareness of society and encourages their participation.
