Chesapeake Bay Retriever, “Made in USA”, is a very rare breed even at home, but belongs to the very crowded category of retriever, hunting and water dogs. It is a very beautiful animal with an active and enterprising character. Definitely hunting, and proved to be skilled both on land and in water.
The name of the breed is that of the bay where they were originally unleashed by their owners to hunt waterfowl. They are dogs accustomed to climatic and aquatic conditions of the most terrible, which is little to say that they are tempered. Often they had to break the ice to do their duty and obey the master, to whom they are always faithful. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever it is a powerful dog but also very beautiful: the coat is particular, it seems to have been studied at the table by an engineer, and the clear eyes, magnet.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever: origins
Selected overseas, in the northern areas, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever it is the result of a cross between two Newfoundland dogs - a light red male and a black female - then mated with various local Retrievers. The Flat-coated Retriever and the Curly-coated Retriever they have origins practically identical to this dog, so much so that the first seems to be the smooth-haired version and the second the curly-haired version. They are distinct breeds, however officially, even if the similarities are numerous both from the behavioral and morphological point of view.
On the origins of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever there is not much clarity but there is a beautiful legend that sees them arriving on the coasts of North America together with some surviving sailors of an English brig shipwrecked in 1807. They would be the first selectors of the breed which then had to wait until 1885 to be formalized. In the same year the Chesapeake Bay Retriever he also got his standard, his Club was born in 1918, thanks to the passionate Albert Lee. The headquarters were in Minnesota.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever: puppies
The puppies of Chesapeake Bay Retriever they are wonderful with a fur still forming and the sweet face of almost any Retriever. When large they can measure up to 66 cm at the withers and 34 kg in weight, if males. The females are less robust but always of medium size. As dogs I am robust and strong, well proportioned in appearance and with a nice coat, resistant and consistent.
The head of this animal is large and round, the muzzle is rather short and pointed but not to be pointed, and ends with a very wide nose, of the same color as the coat. The ears are hanging down, in Chesapeake Bay Retriever, not large and not protruding, the eyes have a medium size and are clear, yellowish, very particular. Finally, the tail has a length ranging from 30 to 37.5 and becomes increasingly thin towards the tip, it may also have fringes but it is not a must.
All the physical but, given his work, especially the limbs of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever they are very muscular and well boned, the legs are webbed for obvious practical reasons. Agile and snappy, even if not slender, this Retriever it has a defined, relaxed gait, prefers gallop.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever: photo
I did not mention the hair because it must first be seen in the photos and then understand "what is underneath" and above all how useful it is as well as aesthetically particular. In Chesapeake Bay Retriever it must be thick and short, never longer than 3.75 cm, and with a profuse woolly undercoat, but never, never must show curls. On the muzzle and on the limbs the hair is short and straight, slightly but only slightly can be wavy on the shoulders, neck, back and loins.
All colors are allowed shades of brown, ranging from dark brown to dull tan. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever it can also be “dead leaf” color from tan to straw: a color that is quite sought after. However, in the case of this breed, it must be considered that mother nature has not gone mad, and neither are the breeders: the colors are very important and aimed at the possibility of camouflaging the dog while hunting. Especially duck hunting therefore the colors are those of its habitat.
In addition to the chromatic aspect of the hair, its texture is essential and must also be flawless to put each Chesapeake Bay Retriever in the conditions to hunt even in the most terrible weather conditions, complete with ice and snow.
For this purpose the mantle is therefore formed by a top coat, greasy, and from the undercoat, woolly. Both, combined together, are able to prevent cold water from reaching the dog's skin, which will dry out faster than many other breeds. If the dog shakes out of the water, it does not splash but is only wet.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever: character
From the life he leads, or that he did, and from the origins, it is clear that this is one very resistant and rustic breed. He enjoys robust health, rarely gets sick but should not be kept in the house too much: he has a constant need to move and exercise. Better still if this includes a bath and a swim, not daily but almost.
The character is consequent to these qualities: he has a way of doing things typical of those who work and are dedicated to the task for which he was created. IS' serious and attentive, not very accustomed to sociability even if he establishes an excellent relationship with the owner and his family. It is not for big crowds, it is on its own and prefers nature, better if there is also a duck to chase.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever: price
It is not a very widespread breed and in Italy it will be difficult to find it: then we will see the situation of the breeding of Chesapeake Bay Retriever in the Peninsula. Although not a VIP breed, I imagine that the price will hardly be less than a thousand euros. What should be done is to take a direct interest by contacting breeders.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever: breeding
In Italy, from the ENCI site, there are 2 farms of Chesapeake Bay Retriever and they are both in Lombardy: one in the province of Varese and one near Brescia. The spread of the breed goes hand in hand if not worse.
In the past few years, sometimes there was not even one, in 2015 - the latest ENCI figure - the specimens registered by ENCI were 10. But the trend is growth, we'll see. In general it is not a very widespread breed, it is not only us who do not know it well yet, in the United States itself, homeland, there are not many Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
