Thermostatic valve installationhow to do the assembly of thermostatic valves on radiators with the DIY. How a thermostatic valve works and all the instructions, step by step, to install them on the radiators.

Theassembly of thermostatic valvesis the age-old issue that involves all those who live in a condominium with central heating. According to the 2012/27 / EU directive for energy efficiency, it will be mandatory by 31 December 2016 to install, on each radiator, a thermostatic valve for heat metering in condominiums with central heating;

What happens if you don't install the thermostatic valves where does the obligation apply?

Failure to install by the deadline provides for high penalties of between 500 and 2,500 euros, depending on the provisions of the various regions.

Regardless of the obligation, thethermostatic valvesthey are a very useful tool formaximize the performance of the radiatorsand save energy and money on your billgas. Anyone who has never had to deal with thermostatic valves and is intrigued by their operation can learn more about the topic on the page"Thermostatic valves, how they work". Below we will see, in detail, how to mount thermostatic valves with DIY.

Thermostatic valve installation

For theassembly of thermostatic valveson a heater that has never fitted a valve, you will need tools and materials for installation, such as:

  • thermostatic valvesorthermostatic valves
  • Hemp or raffia thread
  • Paste for plumbing appliances
  • Fitting compatible with the water inlet pipe of the radiator
  • Manual or electronic thermostatic head

Among the tools you will need for theassemblyof thethermostatic valvewe point out: roller cables, screwdrivers, cutter, wrench for tightening the valve.

Thermostatic valve installation: the choice of valves

According to yoursheateryou can choose thethermostatic valvewith the most suitable fitting. There are thermostatic valves on the marketstraightor ateam. The thermostatic valve must be purchased with the fittings (not always included), check that the fittings are compatible with the size of the pipes of yourheaters. This check must be done carefully if you have old radiators, for radiatorsrelativelynewer, the measures will be compatible because now they all meet precise standards.

Thermostatic valve installation, how to do it

1). Radiator vent
First of all, remember to empty the water circuit of the heating system before starting work: open the drain valve of the boiler and the vent valve of the radiator.

2). Disassembly
Remove the existing valve: unscrew the nut of the connection between theradiatorand the old valve. At this stage you will need a roller wrench to loosen the key that you can finish unscrewing by hand.

3). Finish disassembly
Slightly extract the old valve (gently pull the tube of the old valve outwards a little) and then complete the disassembly by unscrewing the body of the old valve. You will need this to separate it from the threaded fitting of the heating pipe. This is where you will have to mount the new valve! Also at this stage you will need the roller wrench or maybe even two: one to hold the thread bolt in place and the other to turn the one to be removed.

4). The new fitting
Prepare the new fillet: roll out a very small amount ofsealing paste for plumbing applianceson the threaded part of the new fitting. Take the hemp thread and wrap it three times on the dough, wrap it clockwise. Fit the new fitting into the radiator and tighten it. At this stage you will need a valve key.

5). The new valve
Use hemp and sealing paste to coat the thread of the thermostatic valve body, this way you will avoid futuredripsorleaks from the radiator. Screw the valve body by hand and then tighten with the nut. Also screw the conical union nut onto the new valve.

6). Assembly of the thermostatic head
The thermostatic head is the one that will allow you toadjust the temperaturein home. Insert it in correspondence with the needle nut that comes out of the body just assembled. Assembly is simple: just push the valve head towards the needle with one hand. Then close the ring that guarantees fastening (you will hear a small click).

Before putting the heating system into operation, fill the circuit again with water and then vent it to eliminate the air present within the system circuit. To find out how to vent a radiator, if you have never done it before, you can take advantage of our guide:How to remove air from radiators.
