Foal, how not to be moved by his sight or even just to think about his first steps. Why settle for imagining them when we have a video that shows them as if we were by his side cheering for him. For the foal that will later become a horse, in front of our eyes, as has happened for centuries. Because human and equine destiny have galloped hand in hand, since time immemorial. How much do we really know about them?
Foal: the horse's cub
Defined as a puppy of the horse, more precisely it can be defined foal any young equine which does not exceed the age of one year. A year with the bill that begins from birth, a long-awaited moment, by us but before that by the mother of our puppy, and which arrives after a gestation period of about 11 months. Almost a year to wait, yes, but then it's a moment, and the baby is born. Most often at night, and it comes to light already strong and perfectly formed.
Twin parts or plurigemellari are rare, and not desired, moreover, because two healthy foals together are not born easily and there is a high and unpleasant risk that one of the two will not resist. Unfortunately it also happens that both do not make it and that, for two years, the mare is left without hers foal, not to mention the possibility that she will lose her skin too.
On the birth of the foal there are various rumors. One of the most curious ones concerns more than anything else her mother - It is a popular legend, but perhaps also partly truth, that the mare is able to delay giving birth until she is able to be alone. In fact, it seems that - always in the form of gossip - the lady does not love that humans or horses attend the birth.
Once the foal comes to light, with or without "audience", you can immediately assess his health by observing limbs and legs. The limbs must be large and strong with long and muscular legs. The foal stops being such and becomes a horse when it turns 5: at that point it is an adult in all respects.
Birth of a foal and first steps: video
As promised, especially to those who have never had the good fortune to attend in person, here a video showing the first moments of a foal. A great emotion, a beautiful scene often used also in literature, the famous first steps of a foal, unsuspected in their tremor when then shortly after we see the animal advance galloping indomitable. Yet, the first steps are first steps for everyone, even for those who then run as fast as the wind.

Development of the foal
From horse foal in 5 years, but in the meantime? Meanwhile, our puppy grows and also very fast: in the early days the pace can be even 1 kg per day. In the first weeks of life, everything he needs comes from mother's milk until he gradually switches to the adult diet. Without too much haste because the breast milk it is very well able to provide nourishment and more. Even the antibodies and substances that serve for the development of the immune system.
The "milk" more precisely speaking is the colostrum, a yellow and serous liquid similar to milk, which is abandoned and replaced by foods typical of the adult diet from the age of about 10 days. Immediately, in addition to feeding him, the mare cleans and sniffs his foal to learn its smell and never exchange it, lose it or neglect it.
The speed with which from the first uncertain steps, the foal arrives at a great ease of gallop is phenomenal. In a few hours, from birth, we can see the horse cubs trotting on their long legs almost simultaneously with the first feedings.
Even if already rambling, the horse cub he is treated on sight by his mother in the first six months of life, then begins his weaning. For horses that live in the wild, almost absurdly, or perhaps it is the law of nature, the period of suckling and custody on sight lasts a whole year instead of half.
One time weaned the foals it is not the kind of puppy that disappears almost ungrateful, continues to seek the company of the mother even if completely autonomous and able to provide for itself. He looks for his mother but she has already "explained" to him in the first months what he needs to get by: you never know. He gave him information about the best herbs, about how to behave with other horses and with us humans.
As for it physical development of the foal, you can see great metamorphoses in the hair and teeth, more than anything else, while for the dimensions, in general the definitive ones are reached at three years of age. As for the hair, the soft and woolly one, usually curly even in the tail, with which the puppy is born, nicely called 'crazy hair', disappears to give way to the "classic" adult one, including mane, on the tail and mane .
Milk teeth are gradually replaced by permanent teeth within 5 years, when the foal "officially" becomes a horse, it has 40 teeth if it is male, 36 if female, because it has no 'brackets'. Nello development of the foal His relationship with us is also included as the horse is an animal that is very much in contact with man.
The first moments spent together are important and mark the character balance of what will be an imposing adult horse. Before approaching the foals it is better to win over the mother so that she can trust and then let us dedicate herself to her little one. Understandable, I would say.
Once the consent of the mare new mother we can pamper and get to know her puppy, patiently trying to teach him to respond to the physical and visual stimuli we provide him. It must not be an imposition but an exchange, we also listen to its signals so as not to trigger unwanted reactions and adverse behaviors, difficult to correct in the future.
Foal to be colored
A baby horse usually children like a lot, as forms, as an idea, as a reality, live, to be caressed, known, cuddled. Without excluding trips, meetings and live experiences, we can still give our little ones a horse cub already drawn to color at will. Black, brown, beige, cream, or with imaginative colors that only design and imagination allow.
