Forsythia, a garden plant also cultivable in pots which, alone, creates a typically yellow spot already in early spring capable of immediately put those who do not like cold weather in a good mood of winter. This shrub anticipates many others of its kind with its yellow flowers and is not at all difficult to cultivate, it adapts to all types of soil and loves the sun.
Lately it is a bit neglected, the Forsythia, for the benefit of others more exotic plants, but in the long run everyone will change their minds and will come back, I'm sure, to choose her. A classic that never sets and, above all, that it always blooms.
Forsythia: plant
Also called Forsythia, this kind of plant is rustic and requires few things: a sunny position, for example. If placed in the shade it does not die but it can have a harder time flowering and its explosive yellow could be more subdued even in the middle of the season.
In winter it can withstand the cold and adapts to all terrains, although it is better to choose one well drained since the stagnant water can create problems. Although it does not have many needs, the Forsythia greatly appreciates if every 2-3 years we remember to enrich its soil by using organic fertilizer or slow release granular.
Yellow forsythia
By definition, or almost, the Forsythia is yellow even if, as we will see, it is a plant that reserves pleasant chromatic surprises for us. However, most of the species remain faithful to the color of the sun, there are about ten of them and they are all deciduous shrubs, native to Asia.
The most common are the F. suspensa and the F. viridissima and the hybrid that is born from these two. It is called Zabel's Forsythia and grows faster than average, up to 4 meters in height, forming a messy bush, with erect and little branched stems, brown. The green leaves can be oval or lanceolate and curiously come after the flowers. Hence, the life cycle of the Forsythia first predicts the yellow of the flowers, in late winter, e then the leaves. In April.
White forsythia
As announced here is the first surprise: the White forsythia. Very similar to the yellow, this shrub is slightly smaller and produces more fragrant flowers, as well as pure white color.
Native to Korea, this white version has thin elongated stems that form a rounded bush that reaches a maximum of 2 meters in diameter, growing very slowly, alternating oval, bluish-green leaves and white flowers. First the flowers, as Forsythia has always accustomed us, particular also for their star shape: they fall pendulous and always in advance of other garden plants.
Red forsythia
You cannot literally speak of Red forsythia, but it also cannot be denied that flowers may appear that are neither white nor yellow, but rather deep pink. Hence, the name of Red forsythia, with all the same characteristics of the "standard" plant already described.
Forsythia: pruning
It is necessary to be careful when you want prune forsythia, not because it is particularly delicate, but because it should not be interrupted when it is blooming or has just bloomed. Never in spring, therefore, because the flowers appear on young branches, at the end of winter, before the leaves, if we prune in this phase, we block theyellow or white explosion that belongs to us.
Pruning, a true green thumb knows, must be done immediately after flowering: branches that have finished flowering must be shortened and those that have become too woody or bare should be eliminated. For all information on thepruningthe guide is available: how to prune forsythia.
Forsythia: cutting
One of the best ways to reproduce the Forsythia is that through cuttings, to prepare them you must choose a period of the year in which the plant is not in vegetative growth. At this point, the woody apexes of young branches, at the end of the summer, and they are rooted in a vase previously filled with peat mixed with sand.
If we leave them in a humid and cool place, the cuttings thus arranged root easily without requiring other operations before proceeding with burying them. There are those who root the cuttings in water, in the case of Forsythia it is not a particularly recommended procedure because this plant is in such conditions produces too thin roots and delicate that could then later break.
Forsythia: bonsai
There F. bonsai it's simply dwarf, there are some species including the "Marèe d'Or", the "Boucle d'Or" and the "Show Off". None of these species exceeds one meter in height but like the other bigger sisters it blooms abundantly and early.
These bonsai they are often used to form borders, especially the third which blooms more generously, in yellow. The other larger Forsythias are instead used both as single specimens and to form hedges given the rapid development and early blossoming of flowers.
