Hallux valgus, it is mainly women who suffer from it, ten times more than men, it is a question of high heels, but not only, also of age and any cases of inheritance. Sometimes this deformity of the big toe that we will get to know better, comes associated with flat foot even if it is not a rule. This is linked to the fact that if the curvature of the sole is reduced, the foot is overloaded in its front part and this in the long run can lead to calluses or ulcerations. Or to deformations to the second and third finger, defined as "hammer" with potential consequences, in severe cases, also on the knees, hips and spine.

Hallux valgus: what it is

It is about one of the most common foot pathologies and it is not serious although certainly not pleasant. Let's see what it entails: a deformity of the big toe, in particular a lateral deviation of the phalanx with the dislocation of two small bones called sesamoids.

Having said this, it is not clear how to distinguish theHallux valgus from other deformities affecting our feet, except that it is often accompanied by a swelling on the inside of the foot which causes a lot of pain. It is what is commonly called "onion" and is in effect inflammation caused by rubbing with the shoe.

In addition to the onion, other signs of Hallux Valgus are gods pains on the sole of the foot but above all some walking difficulties as well as obvious changes in the foot a lot anti aesthetic.

Hallux valgus: causes

There are those who have hallux valgus for congenital causes, or for secondary causes, in the first case the problem emerges during the growth phase, while if this problem, if it is "acquired", derives from rickets, inflammatory, infectious, tropic or traumatic forms.

Sometimes the causes that hide behind so much pain are nothing short of "trivial", such as the choice of an inappropriate shoe for our foot or that makes it assume an unnatural position that leads to Achilles tendon to shorten.

A classic example is footwear with a high heel from 10 to 14 cm: they carry too much weight to load on the front of our foot, upsetting the distribution of weight that we normally have as humans. Thus ends up that the feet assume an inward rotated position, a risk also for the ankles that could be sprained.

Hallux valgus: remedies

To permanently solve the problem is surgery required, there are various types, which act on the bone, on the soft parts or on both. The purpose always remains the same, that is, correcting the clinical and radiological parameters in order to realign the big toe. This can be done by controlling central metatarsalgia, improving the angle of valgus and eliminating excess bone tissue near the onion.

Distal percutaneous osteotomy is the most frequent operation, it is minimally invasive and often involves a admission to day hospital. Then, after the operation, for four weeks the correction is maintained by a thread that is removed in the clinic. Meanwhile, weekly dressing checks and dressing checks should be performed.

Hallux valgus: brace

To ensure that the correction carried out during the surgery is maintained at its best, the use of simple, inexpensive but effective braces is recommended. At 8 euros on Amazon we find this model, comfortable and also easy to fix.

Hallux valgus: prevention

The best way to preventHallux valgus is to choose shoes wisely, and not just with taste. The best, in terms of foot health, are those that support the natural shape of the foot by supporting the plantar arch. So let's check that the upper is soft and seamless and that the sole is flexible especially at the toe. The sports shoes are great but there are also equally suitable walking shoes. Those who do not go out without a heel must be satisfied with the five centimeter one, maximum!

If we are not convinced, we can ask a specialist why he can indicate orthopedic insoles or footwear designed specifically for do not overload the front of the foot. Even physiotherapy in some cases can help to slow down the process but nothing can make it regress.

Hallux valgus: exercises

After the operation instead of waiting puffing for the'Obligation to stand still, let's dedicate ourselves to some very useful exercises to get back to kicking quickly and well. For example, let's take a fairly soft ball and, remaining standing upright, let's put it under the sole of the foot and move by sliding it from the plantar arch to the toes and then in the opposite direction to the heel without applying too much pressure.

There are also rotation exercises to be done seated with the legs extended, moving the big toe in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction and then trying to extend the thumb laterally. Remaining seated with the legs extended, we move the big toe gently, helping with our hands, lowering it slightly and then lifting it, but always in axis. Lying down we can do exercises for hallux valgus with legs bent and feet resting on a wall.

Starting from the heel, we lift the feet starting from the heel and gradually supporting different parts up to the phalanges maintaining the position for about 5 seconds. Let's stand up and we walk barefoot in the house or, if possible, on the beach, stopping every ten steps and slightly bending the knee so as to touch the ground only with the fingers.
