Parabens in cosmetics

Parabens in cosmetics, as well as in food, they are present and it is not necessarily a bad thing. Before condemning these substances, let's learn about them and not to do all of them Parabens an enemy. They have preservative properties which, in the case of cosmetics, are useful to protect them from contamination by bacteria, molds and fungi.

This, as we will see, avoids that even just purchased products, once opened, are already on the way to irreversible alteration: counting how much certain cosmetics cost today ... it is absolutely necessary that this does not happen. THE parabens which by law are allowed in the "recipe" of cosmetics, they have no impact on human health.

Parabens: meaning

It is a group of substances with preservative properties that we can find in nature but we can also manufacture with our own hands. In nature we find them in plants and animals, every day we find them in some foods, medicines and household products, as well as in cosmetics.

Six Parabens were not there, it would be "green light" for bacteria, germs and all other microorganisms that are harmful to humans, they would develop in the products compromising their properties in a definitive, slow and inexorable way. Making them useless, sometimes even dangerous for our health. So before seeing Parabens as enemies and choosing products that are free of them, let's evaluate how they serve to guarantee conservation of products

Parabens in cosmetics

In the specific case of cosmetics, i Parabens come into play as soon as we open a package of the product we want to use, avoiding that it is contaminated by bacteria, fungi and molds present in the environment. In this way we avoid the alteration of the properties of the cosmetic itself and a potential consequent damage to our health.

By damage to health I mean the onset of irritation, inflammation, even skin infections. These can be "annoyances" for those who do not have particularly sensitive skin, but otherwise, or if you are dealing with children, a paraben-free cosmetic, deteriorated, it can create very painful situations.

Parabens: list

I start by indicating the main parabens, leaving you to delve deeper from label to label, as needed. The six most frequently used are: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben and benzylparaben. It is found in many cosmetics but also in other body products such as moisturizers, sunscreens, or toothpastes, shampoos, intimate cleansers, deodorants and shaving gels.

It is not certain that there are no if the wording "natural" or "organic" appears in large letters on the product packaging. On the market, even online, we find creams and other products that specify their being paraben-free, an example is this restful lavender gel, available on Amazon for 6.20 euros: it ensures peaceful sleep, without nightmares and without parabens, if applied to temples and pulse points.

Parabens: harmful?

Sui parabens they say about cooked and raw, they are substances often criticized a priori, without having first taken the trouble to inquire, both about their properties and about what the law and scientific studies say. They are man-made and included in cosmetics to make sure you have a safe product from a microbiological point of view throughout its use.

Today they are considered safe substances, not at first sight, after numerous investigations carried out by the scientific bodies of the EU. It is proved that they do not cause any problems for human health, have been officially approved by the European Commission and other authorities such as preservatives for cosmetics. They have been coming for over 50 years employed in the cosmetic industry, pharmaceutical and food, there are even some naturally occurring plant origin such as Methylparaben.

This substance is produced by the plant itself, to defend itself from parasites, I certainly do not deny the existence of parabens obtained by chemical synthesis, more stable and more absorbable by cosmetic means. In any case, however you think about parabens, you need to know that when you see it written on "paraben-free" or "paraben free" cosmetics it doesn't mean at all that the product is safer: it may very well contain healthier preservatives, not parabens but of course they are not doing well.
