Gloxinia: perennial plant
There gloxinia is a perennial and tuberous herbaceous plant, there are about twenty species. The genus to which it belongs is that of Sinningia, it is native to South America. In Italy as in most of our continent, we find above all the Sinningia speciosa. It is the most representative, it comes from Brazil and is recognized for its small stem and for the large fleshy, dark green and oval leaves.
Gloxinia also climbing has a fantastic yield, it produces delicate and colorful flowers, enlivening rooms and decorating walls that would instead be very sad. Also online we can find gloxinia, climbing or bonsai seeds. A pack of 100 of Sinningia Speciosa pot bonsai on Amazon they cost 11 euros.
Finally, let's talk about the flowers of this perennial plant which are its reason for being and our reason for buying it. Their shape is tubular-bell-shaped, to the touch they are velvety beyond the color they have. There are many shades and varieties, everyone can choose the one they prefer to decorate balconies and gardens, gloxinia is also used as houseplant.
The flowers are 5 to 10 cm long, with shades that they vary from lilac / violet to purple, classically, but on the market they are also found hybrids with more garish colors, with different shapes and double formats. So let's not be surprised if we find a white or red gloxinia.
This plant produces the flowers starting from May to August, if well maintained, it does in abundance. To "keep it well" leave it in the light for at least 12-14 hours without, however, being hit too much by direct sunlight. The temperature is best not to drop below 18 ° C, in summer remember to water it very frequently, in other seasons it is enough once every 15 days, then a lot depends on the climate of the area in which we live.
In the flowering phase, gloxinia must be fertilized once a week, making sure that it is not affected by virosis of tomato. It manifests itself with the appearance of dark rings on the leaf blade and unfortunately if we notice this phenomenon, we must give up and destroy the sick plant to avoid transmitting the disease to others.
To keep the gloxinia, do not overdo it with water so as not to make gray mold appear and find ourselves forced to use fungicides. Aphids are also enemies of leaves and flowers, if they attack our plant we must remove them with specific insecticides. Too much sun can cause the leaves to curl.
The joy that flowers bring in winter is a memory, but we can wait for that of the following spring. Meanwhile, let's protect the our gloxinia: in autumn, when the aerial part dries up, the tubers must be extracted from the ground and placed in a cool and dry place, in the dark.
To keep them you need a temperature of about 10-12 ° C. Only in March of the following year can we pick them up and repot them in a soil rich in peat. We can “Recycle” the tubers even for three or four consecutive years. As for sowing, the period is from February to March.
