Feeding of reptiles it is a very vague title because as the reference category is wide and varied, so too is the menu chosen from time to time by the individual animals. We find omnivorous and phytophagous reptiles, if desired, even if most are actually carnivores, but each species in its own way, or almost.
Feeding of reptiles: snakes
The first reptiles that come to mind are often and willingly snakes that have a particular diet. In general they are considered fearsome predators, they eat many other animals but do not disdain even dinners egg base, indeed, they swallow them all whole without the slightest sense of guilt.
It is difficult to find snakes that usually go in search of fruit to feed themselves they use their sense of smell to identify prey, also because they cannot count on a particularly developed sight, with the exception of some species. When they decide to catch a prey, their tactic is that of waiting, as do other reptiles, such as crocodiles and some turtles.
Feeding of carnivorous reptiles
In most cases the diet of reptiles is based on meat, also that of the lizards which in fact feed on insects and small animals. Even lesser known reptiles have a carnivore menu: the little worm chooses worms and mollusks, the moloch le ants swallowing up to 1500 at a time, not to mention the monitor lizards that go in search of carrion licking its whiskers.
Always remaining carnivorous, the diet of reptiles it can also vary with the seasons, also in correspondence with the climate. When it comes to catching prey, reptiles sport different strategies from time to time. THE saurians use their sight to hunt and then they go to get it, without waiting, the chameleon uses his tongue while remaining motionless, apart from the rolling eyes: a scene known to many because it is rather funny.
Feeding of omnivorous reptiles
The diet of reptiles when it sees the meat present as well as other ingredients can be called "omnivorous". An example is the marine iguana that feeds on algae, collecting them along the coasts, even the turtles they are often omnivorous and use their sharp, sharp beak for breaking up.
In the omnivorous species digestion can be more delicate but in general it is mainly affected by the climate. In fact, when the temperature is too low or too high, if therefore it is different from the optimal one, reptiles struggle to digest. It should be borne in mind that reptiles living in areas with temperate climates go into hibernation in winter.
